Lyrically Speaking - 2/12/20

#1 Post by Billy Bored Thornton » Tue Feb 11, 2020 10:07 pm

LB decided he needed a "mental health day" (whatever that is), so the Bored's favorite Southern gentleman has offered to help.

How about we call this edition of Wacky Wednesday "Hidden Figures". Seems to me that men have been singing songs about girls since the beginning of rock n roll. Most of the time, they just put the girl's name right there in the title (hi Barbara Ann and Venus and Julia). That's not the case today. No siree! These twelve girl's names are hiding somewhere in the lyrics of the twelve songs listed below.

I know you're in there, girls! Come out, come out wherever you are! I'll be waiting right here in my double wide.

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, 1 point for the mystery girl's name

1. They say there's a heaven for those who will wait
Some say it's better, but I say it ain't
I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints
The sinners are much more fun

2. And I sang with all my might
And she said, "Tell me are you a Christian child?"
And I said, "Ma'am I am tonight."

3. 'Cause if my eyes don't deceive me
There's something going wrong around here
Around here

4. When I'm tired and thinking cold
I hide in my music, forget the day
And dream of a girl I used to know
I closed my eyes and she slipped away

5. Each night by the stage you appear as you are
The ever intangible child
Ageless and timeless as Dorian Gray

6. When logic and proportion have fallen slowly dead
And the White Knight is talking backwards
And the Red Queen's off with her head

7. He got a custom Continental
He got an Eldorado too
He got a thirty two gun in his pocket for fun
He got a razor in his shoe

8. Now that spring is in the air
Pretty girls are everywhere
Think of me and I'll be there

9. And I remember what she said to me
How she swore that it never would end
I remember how she held me oh so tight
Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then

10. I said, "Wait a minute, mister
I didn't even kiss her
Don't want no trouble with you."

11. Walkin' my mind back to easy times
My back turned towards the sun
Lord knows when the cold wind blows
It'll turn your head around

12. The highways jammed with broken heroes
On a last chance power drive
Everybody's out on the run tonight
But there's no place left to hide

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that contains a girl's name in the lyrics but not in the title

Image Bonus: Show me your ti...I mean show me girls, girls, girls!

You did use the plural and since there was no Annie bonus I thought I would post a nod to it but I really didn't want "Squirrels in Drag" in my search history and then showing up in your yearly rundown on "Evil Squirrel's Nest" of weird searches, so I stuck with the singular.

Billy Bored Thornton

You started without me!!!11
Billy Bored Thornton

Only the Good Die Young - Billy Joel - VIrginia

2. And I sang with all my might
And she said, "Tell me are you a Christian child?"
And I said, "Ma'am I am tonight."

Walking in Memphis - Marc Cohn

3. 'Cause if my eyes don't deceive me
There's something going wrong around here
Around here

Is She Really Going Out with Him - Joe Jackson - Jeannie

4. When I'm tired and thinking cold
I hide in my music, forget the day
And dream of a girl I used to know
I closed my eyes and she slipped away

More Than a Feeling - Boston - Marianne

5. Each night by the stage you appear as you are
The ever intangible child
Ageless and timeless as Dorian Gray

Sing for the Day - Tommy Shaw - Hannah

Invoking the Ozzy Rule since I always think of this song as more Shaw than Styx.
Fun Fact: Shaw named his daughter after the song. Hannah Shaw aka Kitten Lady is an animal advocate and educator specializing in neonates. I attended one of her workshops in 2018.

6. When logic and proportion have fallen slowly dead
And the White Knight is talking backwards
And the Red Queen's off with her head

White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane - Alice

7. He got a custom Continental
He got an Eldorado too
He got a thirty two gun in his pocket for fun
He got a razor in his shoe

Bad Bad Leroy Brown - Jim Croce - Doris

I can't recall the lyric, but Doris is popping into my head for some reason...

8. Now that spring is in the air
Pretty girls are everywhere
Think of me and I'll be there

Seasons in the Sun - Terry Jacks - Michelle

9. And I remember what she said to me
How she swore that it never would end
I remember how she held me oh so tight
Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then

Against the Wind - Bob Seger - Janie

10. I said, "Wait a minute, mister
I didn't even kiss her
Don't want no trouble with you."

Gimme Three Steps - Lynyrd Skynyrd - Linda Lou

JJC Points:

Vandal gets the highest base score from this game (43) as well as a supermax for getting Billy Bored Thornton to write up a game on the back of his Waffle House napkin...

jarnon gets a JJC point for the original Angels...

Sprots gets 2 JJC points for taking pictures down at the strip club...

Krox gets 3 JJC points for Larry "Bud" Melman in drag...

Panic gets a JJC point for making me look up another TV reference...

Weasel gets a JJC point for explaining his TV reference...

frank gets a supermax for totally killing the mood...

melly gets 2 JJC points for girls peeing their pants...

TBone gets 3 JJC points for proving that Minerva Mink wasn't the only minx from Animaniacs...

mrk gets 2 JJC points for going back to the Taxi, and for Sue coming a long way, baby...

For Beebs, what usually decides whether I give her 3 JJC points or a supermax is if there's a spot anywhere in her answers where I just start busting out laughing. Patsy Purse did that to me yesterday, so a supermax it is...

Earl gets 3 JJC points for showing up late, teaching us who Hannah Shaw is, and for semi-presciency on my part...

Anon gets 3 JJC points for offending an entire continent and for giving us a peek at his little black book...

Esto gets a JJC point for being the only one to IB Motley Crue...

As usual, with any 3 point Krox, you might want to double check these scores....

Points:

jarnon 18+1
Sprots 29+2
Krox 29+3
ear 15
Panic 33+1
Weasel 36+1
frank 37+5
melly 38+2
TBone 41+3+5
mrk 41+2
Beebs 2+5
Hottie 30
Bob 16 (!!!)
Earl 43+3
Anon 32+3
Esto 41+1
Vandal 43+5

No, that's not right. Look at the full lyrics, there are several contradictions to that viewpoint.
