Issur Danielovitch Demsky made it to 103. He was about four months older than my father.

This is probably bigger news in my hometown of Amsterdam NY than anywhere else. He was born and raised there. In High School I won the Kirk Douglas Award, sort of the Best Actor/Actress award of the Wilbur H. Lynch (now Amsterdam High) Drama Club. In the early days of the award, he would return to Amsterdam yearly to personally hand it to the winner, but he had stopped doing so by the time I won it.

My best memory of Kirk Douglas is from a movie set somewhere. There was an older French woman on set, and she was commenting in French on the movie or I don't know what. Douglas was translating! He was telling the other actors and crew and I don't know who all was there what she was saying. It was delightful.

I bet he'll be in the In Memoriam on Sunday. Peace be upon him.

My favorite Douglas film is The Vikings. It's one of those movies that I can watch over and over and still enjoy, and he's at his best as one of his cocky, flawed characters.

Last night, I started to re-watch Ace in the Hole. My Roku box has a search feature that allows you to find a movie or TV show on any of the channels you've got loaded and it's currently on something called Pluto (yes, with commercials). That movie may be his best performance and one of Billy Wilder's best scripts (and it's quite timely today).

I first saw Lonely Are the Brave as a kid and really liked it. Still holds up very well and is still my favorite movie of his.

Pretty sure that I saw somewhere some time back that he thought of it as one of his favorites as well.

The guy who handled his finances (or at least a good part of that) was a very successful businessman in Houston whom I knew personally, although not that well. Pretty close to some of his best friends, though. Because of that connection, for many years I've probably appreciated him and his work a little more than I otherwise would have.

Quite a run, indeed.

Both Conrad and Bean (that sounds spookily like two astronauts) were primarily known as TV actors and will show up in the Emmy tributes. I am glad they gave Catherine Burns a mention in the tribute.

All due respect to Kobe Bryant, but how does he get into the Oscars Memoriam? What were his film credentials?

Kobe won an Oscar for the Best Animated Short Feature two years ago that he produced. Of course, most people whose claim to film fame is producing a single feature that wins a short subject Oscar would not rate a mention in the In Memoriam tribute, but the circumstances were rather different here.
