Lyrically Speaking - 1/22/20

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Wed Jan 22, 2020 8:30 am

For today's game idea, I decided to look up what the top selling albums of the 1980's were by copies sold. Along with the expected, I found a few surprises while looking at the top 12, which I expanded to the top 15 to remove a live album, a posthumous best of album, and a repeat artist. Below are songs from those twelve albums in the top 15... along with the usual title and artist, name the 80's hit album it came from for an extra point.

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, 1 point for the album....

1. They're out to get you, better leave while you can
Don't wanna be a boy, you wanna be a man

2. Working double time
On the seduction line
She was one of a kind, she's just mine all mine

3. Her and her husband Bobby, well they split up
I guess it's two years gone by now

4. And you're a very sexy girl that's very hard to please
You can taste the bright lights but you won't get there for free

5. For tonight is the night, for feeling alright
We'll be making love the whole night through

6. I've been sitting here so long
Wasting time, just staring at the phone
And I was wondering should I call you
Then I thought maybe you're not alone

7. Dig if you will the picture
Of you and I engaged in a kiss

8. Here comes Johnny singing oldies, goldies
Be-Bop-A-Lula, Baby What I Say

9. An angel's smile is what you sell
You promise me heaven then put me through hell

10. Do you tell lies?
And say that it's forever?
Do you think twice, or just touch 'n' see?

11. Now with passion in our eyes
There's no way we could disguise it
Secretly
So we take each other's hand
'Cause we seem to understand
The urgency

12. Through the storm we reach the shore
You give it all but I want more
And I'm waiting for you

Kroxquo Bonus: Name a song with artist that comes from an album NOT included above, but which is still in the Top 50 albums of the 1980's based on sales. Name the album as well for 3 total points.

Image Bonus: Show me some 80's album cover art awesomeness (It can be literal or a creative interpretation of).

1. They're out to get you, better leave while you can
Don't wanna be a boy, you wanna be a man

Beat It, Michael Jackson, Thriller

I'm gonna look this up -- I bet it's #1. Which makes me wonder if 2. is #2.

2. Working double time
On the seduction line
She was one of a kind, she's just mine all mine

3. Her and her husband Bobby, well they split up
I guess it's two years gone by now

Glory Days, Bruce Springsteen, Born in the U.S.A.

RadioDude played this yesterday. This is probably #3, making me think I should know what #2 is. I will ponder to the rest of how long it takes me to finish this game, and then probably give up . . .

4. And you're a very sexy girl that's very hard to please
You can taste the bright lights but you won't get there for free

Welcome to the Jungle, Guns N Roses, Appetite for Destruction (the only Guns N Roses album I know...)

Now I know what it takes for me to get a song! The Dwayne Johnson Jumanji was on television last night, and I watched it to the end, where Welcome to the Jungle plays over the end credits. So for me to get a song, I have to have heard it yesterday . . . (Just kidding . . .)

5. For tonight is the night, for feeling alright
We'll be making love the whole night through

Saving all my love for you, Whitney Houston

6. I've been sitting here so long
Wasting time, just staring at the phone
And I was wondering should I call you
Then I thought maybe you're not alone

7. Dig if you will the picture
Of you and I engaged in a kiss

When Doves Cry, Prince

I'm sitting here imagining T-Bone getting a perfect score . . .

8. Here comes Johnny singing oldies, goldies
Be-Bop-A-Lula, Baby What I Say

Walk of Life, Dire Straits.

I haven't heard this one for a while, but I had an aerobics instructor who used this almost every class.

9. An angel's smile is what you sell
You promise me heaven then put me through hell

10. Do you tell lies?

For today's game idea, I decided to look up what the top selling albums of the 1980's were by copies sold. Along with the expected, I found a few surprises while looking at the top 12, which I expanded to the top 15 to remove a live album, a posthumous best of album, and a repeat artist. Below are songs from those twelve albums in the top 15... along with the usual title and artist, name the 80's hit album it came from for an extra point.

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, 1 point for the album....

1. They're out to get you, better leave while you can
Don't wanna be a boy, you wanna be a man

Beat It - Michael Jackson - Thriller

2. Working double time
On the seduction line
She was one of a kind, she's just mine all mine

You Shook Me All Night Long - AC/DC - Back in Black

3. Her and her husband Bobby, well they split up

Glory Days - Bruce Springsteen - Born in the U.S.A.

4. And you're a very sexy girl that's very hard to please
You can taste the bright lights but you won't get there for free

Welcome to the Jungle - Guns N' Roses - Appetite for Destruction

5. For tonight is the night, for feeling alright
We'll be making love the whole night through

Saving All My Love for You - Whitney Houston - Whitney

6. I've been sitting here so long
Wasting time, just staring at the phone
And I was wondering should I call you
Then I thought maybe you're not alone

One More Night - Phil Collins - No Jacket Required

7. Dig if you will the picture
Of you and I engaged in a kiss

When Doves Cry - Prince - Purple Rain

8. Here comes Johnny singing oldies, goldies
Be-Bop-A-Lula, Baby What I Say

Walk of Life - Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms

9. An angel's smile is what you sell

Here's the source I used for this game, which lists the Top 100 80's albums by copies sold....

https://rateyourmusic.com/list/abyss89/ ... e_80s__usa_/

A fair number of the Kroxes were from albums in the 51-100 range. I probably should have included that range as well since this wasn't as easy as I thought it would be, but oh well...

it was nice of Weasel and Vandal to dig into the old horrible album cover vault (I remember that list being posted way in the early days of this Bored). I went with Vandal for the IBB since I worked an ES version of the Tino album into my blog's logo for the Dusty Vinyl Archive...

JJC Points:

Beebs gets 3 JJC points for generic humor...

Krox gets a JJC point for Madness (I was disappointed to find out it didn't have "One Step Beyond" on it...)

Weasel gets 2 JJC points for the bargain bin and for trying to extend Scorpionfest another day...

frank gets a JJC point for que Seurat Seraut...

TBone gets 2 JJC points for pointing out the stupidity of that Devo cover...

Where to begin with this one? Sprots gets 3 JJC points for assuming TBone would get a perfect score and then getting one right that he missed, messing up the Madonna album and losing all her Krox points, totally botching the Image Bonus, and not Kroxing a song from Graceland, which would have been valid...

melly gets a JJC point for 1984. Despite that being one of the most popular albums of the 80's, I don't think I'd ever seen the cover of it until a few days ago after I read the story of how the smoking angel boy came to be used for it... and naturally I had to check that out.

mrk gets 2 JJC points for old school Phil Ottocensor, and for an album that looks totally 80's...

Vandal gets 2 JJC points for the Latin heartthrob...

Anon gets a JJC point for continuing to give me pointers on how I should be running these games...

Esto gets a JJC point for an album with the artist hidden in plain sight...

Bob gets a JJC point that we won't call a pity point. Only Sprots gets those...

You might want to verify these scores. Every time I make the Krox worth more than 2 points, I sometimes end up forgetting that in the midst of scoring....

Points:

Panic 24
Beebs 0+3
Krox 17+1
Weasel 40+2
ear 3
frank 34+1
TBone 38+2
Sprots 18+3
melly 37+1
Hottie 27
mrk 38+2
jarnon 10
Vandal 22+2+5
Anon 35+1
Esto 40+1
Bob 0+1

Yeah, it surprised me too when I got one that T-Bone didn't.

Adding it all up, it's FIVE, not three.

I await your correction.
