Hall of Fame
Derek Jeter missed by one vote becoming the writers' second unanimous selection to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Larry Walker, in his tenth and final shot, cleared the bar by six votes. Those were the only two players elected by the writers. --Bob

Re: Hall of Fame
My guess is that someone decided not to vote for Jeter because he didn't want the selection to be unanimous.

Larry Walker becomes the first Rockies player in the Hall, thus making the team the last one in MLB to have one of their players in the Hall.

Todd Helton and Michael Cuddyer will get there eventually.

Adding on to this, if any other former Rockie has a shot, it's Dale Murphy. but he'll have to hope for the Harold Baines treatment from the committee...

Re: Hall of Fame
I think Jeter deserves to go in on the first ballot, but the fact that he wasn't on everyone's ballot should not be a concern. I'm pretty sure no one flipped out when Cal Ripken, Jr., a far better shortstop by nearly every measure, got ONLY 98.5% of the votes when elected in 2007.
Jeter was a fine player with a ton of post-season greatness early in his career, but he wasn't the greatest player or even shortstop of his era, so let's not get carried away. Yes, I'm a Red Sox fan if that matters.
I've heard one BBWA voter say he will sometimes not vote for a "sure thing" with one of his ten votes so he can use that vote to help someone else get closer to the 75% needed to get in. A bit dodgy but it does make some sense.
Albert Pujols (#31 in WAR to Jeter's 88) will not get a 100% vote when it's his shot and the world will still turn.
Congratulations Jeter and Walker.
