The Graduate
The Searchers
Twelve Years a Slave
Anna and the King of Siam/The King and I
The Color Purple
Kramer vs. Kramer
Mary Poppins
The Wizard of Oz
The Quiet American

This is way too broad a category, but here are some obvious omissions:

Psycho, Vertigo, Strangers on a Train
Gone with the Wind
Great Expectations (David Lean version)
The Maltese Falcon
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
Tom Jones
The Silence of the Lambs
To Kill a Mockingbird
In the Heat of the Night
A Clockwork Orange
.... I'm already getting tired

Wasn't Gone Girl based on a book? Now imagine seeing it with your soon-to-be ex-wife. --Bob

So now the default is to put the new post above the quote? I prefer it the other way, but then I fear the unfamiliar. Anyway, I agree with Frank, this a way too broad category and there are ssome glaring omissions. In addition to the ones he mentioned:

All Quiet on the Western Front
Shutter Island
A Christmas Carol (George C. Scott version)
The Shining
The Shawshank Redemption
Deliverance

I'm sure there are more.

Here's an article that lists every Best Picture Oscar winner that's based on literature in any way. That includes plays. This is a bit problematic in the case of biographies, since the movie is based on the life of the person. Schindler's List should be on any Best of List, since it's fairly clearly based on a biographical novel rather than the actual life. But saying that Braveheart is based on an epic poem is a bit more questionable.
