Mazal tov Volodymyr Zelensky

#1 Post by jarnon » Sun Apr 21, 2019 11:43 am

Volodymyr Zelensky has been elected President of Ukraine, defeating President Poroshenko in a landslide. He becomes the most prominent Jewish elected official in the world. (The President of Israel, Reuven Rivlin, has little political power.) If Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman remains in office, Ukraine's two highest leaders will be Jewish men. The highest ranking Jewish woman is still Claudia Sheinbaum, mayor of the largest city in North America.

President-elect Zelensky is a former comedian. He starred in the hit TV show Servant of the People, where he played (wait for it) the President of Ukraine. He was also the first winner of Ukraine's Dancing with the Stars. (You can't make this shit up.)

Not any more. Sophie Wilmès is the new prime minister of Belgium. She's the first woman and first Jew in that position.

Mazal tov, Sophie. Sorry, Claudia.

Mazal tov, Sophie. Sorry, Claudia.
The population of Mexico City is greater than the population of Belgium.

Prime minister out ranks mayor, [ir]regardless of the populations.
In the end, they will all pretty much taste the same.

As it happens, this is the 50th anniversary of the election of the first Jewish female prime minister, Golda Meir.
