I am starting to think that the above argument is a bit of a widely used straw man. In the last 50 years, how many people actually tell 3 year olds that they can't play with the opposite gender toy?

Especially, how many of these people would be in the social circle of the couple in the story?

Somehow, it seems worse to deny your little girls the knowledge that princess dresses even exist.
