Our recent spammers

Have used the same e-mail service.

It has now been banned.

Let's hope this slows them a bit.

Thank you, eyégor.

There are times when a troll's menacing visage can be a good thing.

Of course, we can't think that this will stop them completely. They spoof plenty of legitimate addresses too.

Of course, having a foreign address can be a sign something is amiss.

Ya think putting "Benin" in the location was a dead giveaway...?

But how can you not believe someone whose favorite activities are "swim" and "showtimeness"?

What?! You've never heard of Cirque du Soleil? I am having many showy times in the swims down the Benin way. You come watch, eh?
Well, then

You bring any of that showiness around here, and I'll flag you as inappropriate! We don't take kindly to Beniners around these parts....

You might want to look into some of the mods available for phpbb. There's one that will automatically reject anyone who enters a website on registration (the trick, which you can explain for humans, is to register, then add the website afterwards), and another that will ask questions that a human can answer easily, but a bot won't be able to (usually, spammers don't bother to try registering on boards like this in person, they let their bots comb the web for forums to invade). Plenty to choose from. :)

I'm an assistant admin on a phpbb forum for a chess software package, so I've run into a lot of this stuff. :) Unfortunately, the guy who owns the site won't give me enough control to add a mod, and is too busy to do so himself, so we're not yet using any. :(

Yeah, we talked about this earlier this month when we moved to this Bored. We wanted to make it as easy as possible for all the refugees to climb aboard, but we were also aware that the time would come when we had to make it a little more difficult for the undesirable elements.

Looks like that time is arriving.

It's a sad state of affairs when someone builds a new home and it gets vandalized.

Looks like we got us a new one!

You gentlemen may like the avatar of this Country Life newbie. Doesn't quite put the count in country, if you get my drift, but I guess he didn't want to tip off the censors TOO early....

I am currently out of town, visiting friends in Indianapolis, and I'll be here for another day or so. I'm using remote access software to work on my computer at home right now, and just peeked in and saw all of this.

When I get back (late Tuesday) I will be looking at implementing some stronger security features to hopefully prevent against future spam problems. I had thought it would take longer for the spam nonsense to find its way here, but.......in the meantime, the administrators and moderators can continue to just delete the garbage as it appears.

Well, then, I don't have to apologize for cutting you off on 121 in Grapevine on Saturday.
Enough already. It's my fault! Get over it!

That'll be $10, please.

Our latest spammer, ( I don't know if it was able to spam yet or not) who got through the e-mail verification procedure, came from someplace else than the previous ones.

Therefore I have banned e-mail addresses from The most common locales for spammers, Finland, Romania, Czech Republic, Russia & The Netherlands.

If you know of a legit applicant from one of these nations, let an administrator know.
