March 13 QoD -- "By the Numbers"

#1 Post by NellyLunatic1980 » Thu Mar 13, 2008 3:45 am

Rules: viewtopic.php?p=40443#40443

Douglas Adams famously wrote that the number 42 is the answer to life, the universe, and everything. Let’s see if he’s right. Below is a list of facts that can be answered with a numerical response. For each fact, you must tell me if it can or cannot be answered with the number 42. If it can, respond with "42". If the answer is not 42, simply respond with “something else”. You are not required to provide the real number. Just say “something else”.

Answers are due by Friday at 5 PM Eastern.

1. Its binary equivalent is 101010
2. Technetium’s atomic number on the periodic table
3. Total teeth an adult dog has
4. Letters in the word “pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis”
5. Where the Kumars lived
6. Generations in the genealogy of Jesus
7. Age of Bobby Riggs when he lost to Billie Jean King
8. Arizona State University jersey of Pat Tillman, the Army Ranger who was murdered by the U.S. government in 2004
9. Travis Barker’s post-Blink 182 band
10. The sixth “Number” on TV’s “Lost”
11. Montana’s admission to the Union
12. Its square root is 6.324555
13. Laws of cricket
14. Herbie’s racing number
15. Year that Paul converted to Christianity

BONUS
Unlucky number in Japan because it resembles the Japanese word for “going to death”

What, no Jackie Robinson trivia? I was witness to the last Major League hit ever gotten by a player who was wearing the #42 as his regular uniform number, a feat that can only be ruined by Yankees closer Mariano Rivera. Mo Vaughn's final ML hit was an upper deck blast here in St. Louis on 4/30/03....

This is an inventive and very fun question.

Really big kudos to you for thinking of it.

I would love to spend a day wandering around in your brain.

I will be back later to ponder and answer this one.

Ha, I read the questions before the opening and was going to give up since numbers ain't exactly my thing. But then I see that I can be rewarded with blind guessing. YAY! I also was just going to bold until I read the specific "42 or something else" instructions. I love it! It reminds me of teachers who would put something in the instructions like "write your name in the upper right hand corner, last name first" to make sure people read the instructions and you'd be docked if you didn't. I hope it's extra credit for following instructions.

Spoiler
1. Its binary equivalent is 101010 = 42

2. Technetium’s atomic number on the periodic table = Something Else

3. Total teeth an adult dog has = 42 (I know cats, I don't know dogs; WAG)

4. Letters in the word “pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis” = Something Else (hope it is OK to count them, rather than answer off the top of one's head)

5. Where the Kumars lived = Something Else

6. Generations in the genealogy of Jesus = A Trick Question, since there are different genealogies, one of which actually says it contains 42 names, but if you count them, there are only 41 people, while the other has lots more, so I have to say Something Else

7. Age of Bobby Riggs when he lost to Billie Jean King = Something Else

8. Arizona State University jersey of Pat Tillman, the Army Ranger who was murdered by the U.S. government in 2004 = Another Trick Question, as there is no Pat Tillman who was murdered by the U.S. Government in 2004, and therefore, the answer cannot be 42, and so must be Something Else

9. Travis Barker’s post-Blink 182 band = 42 (WAG-- never heard of any of this)

10. The sixth “Number” on TV’s “Lost” = Something Else (WAG, have never seen this show)

11. Montana’s admission to the Union = 42

12. Its square root is 6.324555 = Something Else (hope it is OK to do the math)

13. Laws of cricket = Something Else (WAG)

14. Herbie’s racing number = Something Else (WAG)

15. Year that Paul converted to Christianity = Trick Question, since Paul (assuming you mean the guy from Tarsus) was not converted to Christianity, although Saul was. If you mean Saul, then the date is not known exactly, but it was probably earlier, so I will say Something Else

BONUS
Unlucky number in Japan because it resembles the Japanese word for “going to death” = Something Else

3/13 ANSWERS/POINTS

Douglas Adams famously wrote that the number 42 is the answer to life, the universe, and everything. Let’s see if he’s right. Below is a list of facts that can be answered with a numerical response. For each fact, you must tell me if it can or cannot be answered with the number 42. If it can, respond with "42". If the answer is not 42, simply respond with “something else”. You are not required to provide the real number. Just say “something else”.

1. Its binary equivalent is 101010 - 42
2. Technetium’s atomic number on the periodic table - something else (43)
3. Total teeth an adult dog has - 42
4. Letters in the word “pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis” - something else (45)
5. Where the Kumars lived - 42
6. Generations in the genealogy of Jesus - I'm throwing this one out. I was looking for 42, but some sources say there are only 41.
7. Age of Bobby Riggs when he lost to Billie Jean King - something else (55)
8. Arizona State University jersey of Pat Tillman, the Army Ranger who (IMHO) was murdered by the U.S. government in 2004 - 42
9. Travis Barker’s post-Blink 182 band - something else (+44)
10. The sixth “Number” on TV’s “Lost” - 42
11. Montana’s admission to the Union - something else (41)
12. Its square root is 6.324555 - something else (40)
13. Laws of cricket - 42
14. Herbie’s racing number - something else (53)
15. Year that Paul converted to Christianity - I'm throwing this out as well. I should've said Saul, not Paul.

BONUS
Unlucky number in Japan because it resembles the Japanese word for “going to death” - 42

Greyhound got only 22 points on this question, so there was plenty of opportunity for the rest of the upper echelon to cut into that 70-point lead. Mr. Jackson got a near-perfect 38 to cut the lead to 54.
