I was afraid that his not being native-born might cost him if a pop culture question came up.

What surprised me about this was that 10% of the audience didn't know the answer.

No idea, so it's time to ATA and hope they are more rugged than I.

BBTranscriptTeam wrote:$25K In kilometers, what is the approximate distance of a standard marathon?

D. 72 km

1.609 km in a mi. A marathon is 26 mi plus change, so roughly 39 (26 x 1.5) and add a bit.

$50K As of 2006, no woman has ever won a Novel Prize in what category?
A. Chemistry
B. Physics
C. Medicine
D. Economics[/quote]

No problem with this one - the economics prizes all go to old men from the University of Chicago.

BBTranscriptTeam wrote:$50K Roughly how far apart are Tora Bora and Bora Bora?

B. 96 miles
C. 969 miles
D. 9690 miles

No problem with this one but I wouldn't have seen it in the regular stack.

I would of been able to not use any life lines until 4K, ATA
50:50 on 8k
PAF on 16k
I knew the 50k question before he switched it.

Typo alert. The Novel Prize isn't worth much.

Two or three years from now, some newbie reader may be trying to figure out what the question is really asking.

My snap judgment is that we're gonna have another immigrant flameout.

$4K: There goes the ATA

$16K: Never have seen this show. PAF.

$50K: Well, if you knew that Marie Curie won Nobel Prizes in both chemistry and physics, you were already 2/3 of the way there. I had the advantage of knowing that Barbara McClintock won in medicine some 20 years ago.

$50K #2: I knew this one cold as well.

Going for $100K with 50:50 and STQ.

Nicely played by Jean, though.

Nice to see her flirting with an older guy, for once, instead of the college hunks. :P

I had the right hunch, but I'm not sure if I'd have gone with it in the Hot Seat. This sounds like a hard one to google, so perhaps I'd have STQed.

Jean didn't follow the news to have heard of Tora Bora. <sigh>

But aside from that, the question writers seem to have a new theme for geography questions this season: pick two random locations and make the contestants estimate the distance between them. I like the category--particularly in this case, with the choices so wide apart--but I doubt very many contestants will!

Wait till I show up there! Meredith and I are very close in age. There's nothing like shared life and culture experiences ... :-)
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

I like the concept also. In this case, if you've heard of the two places, it should be fairly easy to visualize the globe and estimate the distance to the degree they're requiring.

Tora Bora is somewhere in the neighborhood of the Afghanistan/Pakistan border. Of course I had never heard of it before someone was allegedly hiding there. Bora Bora is somewhere in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. A little visualization makes it clear that they are much farther than 1,000 miles apart which makes the correct answer clear.

Jean had been to Bora Bora and knew where it was, but thought Tora Bora was in Japan. I wonder if he was confused by the movie, "Tora, Tora, Tora".

That sounds quite possible.

Even so, Japan to Polynesia should be over 1,000 miles! And if it's under 9,000, that's reason enough to reconsider his guess.

16K: I knew this when it aired but didn't now; must have seen publicity for it back then. ATA

25K: 50/50 for much the same reason at the contestant did.

STQ 50K: Say its my 100K; I'd still be alive!
