Lyrically Speaking - 2/25/08

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Mon Feb 25, 2008 7:35 am

Sadly, this is the final week of the Winter 2008 LS, and thus, this is the final installment of Match Game Monday. As you might have expected, I saved my most diabolical game for last....

Unlike the previous 8 MGM games, instead of breaking the following 12 songs into 6 pairs, you will have to break them up into four trios based on some common theme! That's right, you're looking for three of a kinds, not pairs! Just like in previous MGM games, the trios can all be formed based on some common underlying theme that itself should be challenging to figure out, but I'll bet at least a few of our veteran players can weed it out....

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, and 3 points for each correct trio....

1. It's been a long time since the book of love,
I can't count the tears of a life with no love.
Carry me back, carry me back,
Carry me back, baby, where I come from

2. Lonely rivers flow to the sea, to the sea
To the open arms of the sea

3. There's something in my eyes, you know it happens every time --
I think about a love that I thought would save me.

4. I've got no far horizons
I don't wish upon a star
They don't think that I listen
Oh but I know who they are

5. While she's deceiving me
It cuts my security has
She got control of me
I turn to her and say

6. Well I'm no angel, now, I'll admit
I made a few bad moves I should regret
I hurt you once or so you said
Just one more chance is all you get

7. We can't go on
Just running away
If we stay any longer
We will surely never get away

8. There's a quiet storm
And it never felt like this before
There's a quiet storm
That is you
There's a quiet storm
And it never felt this hot before

9. I’ll tell you one thing
If you would leave it would be a crying shame
In every breath and every word I hear your name calling me out

10. Hey beautiful girl so lovely tonight
Show me the way show me the light
Music playing people swaying
Next thing I knew we started to groove

11. Now nothin' can take you away from me
We've been down that road before
But that's over now
You keep me comin' back for more

12. My mother told me
Yes she told me
I’d meet girls like you
She also told me stay away
She’ll fall in love with you

Spoiler
1. Rock and Roll - Led Zeppelin
2. Unchained Melody - Righteous Brothers
3. Nope, but based on theme, I'll say Operator (Jim Croce, if I'm right)
4. Take Me Home - Phil Collins
5. Sunglasses At Night - Corey Hart
6. Walk On Water - Eddie Money
7. Never - Heart
8. Sweetest Taboo - Sade
9. Smooth - Santana w/ Rob Thomas
10. Nope, but based on theme and lyrics, I'll say Tonight (Kool and the Gang, if I'm right)
11. Heaven - Bryan Adams
12. Nope, but based on theme, I'll say Surrender (Never heard of a song with this title)

Stream of consciousness here... Lots of songs from 1985, but I see only one song each from the 60s, 70s and 90s, and there aren't enough Nopes to fill in the blanks.... Pairings based on number of words in the titles fits, but that means I missed all three four-word titles and besides, this doesn't fit with LB's hint. Actually, it doesn't even fit since I now count four three-word titles. Chart positions? I see two #1s, but the rest are top 10s except for Led Zeppelin. I don't see any remakes or any Same Title by Different Artist answers.

I GOT IT!!! Wow, that took a while...

1-2-11. Rock and Roll Heaven by Righteous Brothers
3-8-9. Smooth Operator by Sade
4-6-10. Take Me Home Tonight by Eddie Money
5-7-12. Never Surrender by Corey Hart

When I was writing them down to mix and match, it all came together and even helped me with a couple I couldn't get before.

1. It's been a long time since the book of love,
I can't count the tears of a life with no love.
Carry me back, carry me back,
Carry me back, baby, where I come from

Rock and Roll - Led Zeppelin

2. Lonely rivers flow to the sea, to the sea
To the open arms of the sea

Unchained Melody - Righteous Brothers

3. There's something in my eyes, you know it happens every time --
I think about a love that I thought would save me.

Operator - Jim Croce

4. I've got no far horizons
I don't wish upon a star
They don't think that I listen
Oh but I know who they are

Take Me Home - Phil Collins

5. While she's deceiving me
It cuts my security has
She got control of me
I turn to her and say

Sunglasses at Night - Corey Hart

This is the one that gave it to me. When I wrote it down, I wrote Never Surrender by mistake since I'd just written down 1 & 7. Ha!

6. Well I'm no angel, now, I'll admit
I made a few bad moves I should regret
I hurt you once or so you said
Just one more chance is all you get

Walk on Water - Eddie Money

Didn't you use this one before?

7. We can't go on
Just running away
If we stay any longer
We will surely never get away

Never - Heart

8. There's a quiet storm
And it never felt like this before
There's a quiet storm
That is you
There's a quiet storm
And it never felt this hot before

The Sweetest Taboo - Sade

9. I’ll tell you one thing
If you would leave it would be a crying shame
In every breath and every word I hear your name calling me out

Smooth - Carlos Santana and Rob Thomas

10. Hey beautiful girl so lovely tonight
Show me the way show me the light
Music playing people swaying
Next thing I knew we started to groove

Tonight - JJ Cale

11. Now nothin' can take you away from me
We've been down that road before
But that's over now
You keep me comin' back for more

Heaven - Bryan Adams

12. My mother told me
Yes she told me
I’d meet girls like you
She also told me stay away
She’ll fall in love with you

Surrender - Cheap Trick

1. Rock and Roll
11. Heaven
2. Righteous Brothers

7. Never
12. Surrender
5. Sunglasses at Night

4. Take Me Home
10. Tonight
6. Eddie Money

9. Smooth
3. Operator
8. Sade

Sadly? Sadly?!? Party Time!!!!!! :P :P :P :P

But you know I won't have a clue, even if I manage to figure out the songs.....

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, and 3 points for each correct trio....

1. It's been a long time since the book of love,
I can't count the tears of a life with no love.
Carry me back, carry me back,
Carry me back, baby, where I come from

Led Zeppelin, and I thought Been a Long Lonely Time was part of the title. Huh.

2. Lonely rivers flow to the sea, to the sea
To the open arms of the sea

Unchained Melody, Righteous Brothers

3. There's something in my eyes, you know it happens every time --
I think about a love that I thought would save me.

Operator, Jim Croce

4. I've got no far horizons
I don't wish upon a star
They don't think that I listen
Oh but I know who they are

Familiar

5. While she's deceiving me
It cuts my security has
She got control of me
I turn to her and say

Sunglasses at Night, the Corey who isn't Feldman or Haim...

6. Well I'm no angel, now, I'll admit
I made a few bad moves I should regret
I hurt you once or so you said
Just one more chance is all you get

Nope

7. We can't go on
Just running away
If we stay any longer
We will surely never get away

Nopeish but familiarish

8. There's a quiet storm
And it never felt like this before
There's a quiet storm
That is you
There's a quiet storm
And it never felt this hot before

Familiar

9. I’ll tell you one thing
If you would leave it would be a crying shame
In every breath and every word I hear your name calling me out

Smooth, Santana

10. Hey beautiful girl so lovely tonight
Show me the way show me the light
Music playing people swaying
Next thing I knew we started to groove

Let's Groove? Kool and the Gang?

11. Now nothin' can take you away from me
We've been down that road before
But that's over now
You keep me comin' back for more

AAAGGGHHH!!! Heaven, Bryan Adams and just about every freakin' Idol contestant this year....

12. My mother told me
Yes she told me
I’d meet girls like you
She also told me stay away
She’ll fall in love with you

Surrender! Cheap Trick!

So I got four songs with one-word titles, assuming those are the titles. I know the sunglaases song was used in a video game from a previous LS. I know Smooth was sung by a guest singer.

I know I have no chance of matching up anything unless I just guess...

1 & 5 & 10

2 & 4 & 11

3 & 8 & 9

6 & 7 & 12

That's pretty funny--just dropping the pen on the paper was better than trying to figure any of these out! Looks like I got one match!

1918 or 1830 are the optimal altitudes to elude me and my 8,000 evil twins.

Beast probably preferred 1661.....

Spoiler
1. It's been a long time since the book of love,
I can't count the tears of a life with no love.
Carry me back, carry me back,
Carry me back, baby, where I come from
Rock and Roll - Led Zeppelin

2. Lonely rivers flow to the sea, to the sea
To the open arms of the sea
Unchained Melody - The Righteous Brothers

3. There's something in my eyes, you know it happens every time --
I think about a love that I thought would save me.
Operator - Jim Croce

4. I've got no far horizons
I don't wish upon a star
They don't think that I listen
Oh but I know who they are
Take Me Home - Phil Collins

5. While she's deceiving me
It cuts my security has
She got control of me
I turn to her and say
Sunglasses at Night - Corey Hart

6. Well I'm no angel, now, I'll admit
I made a few bad moves I should regret
I hurt you once or so you said
Just one more chance is all you get
Walk on Water - Eddie Money

7. We can't go on
Just running away
If we stay any longer
We will surely never get away
Never - Heart (I still remember the kid who sang "Numquam!" in Latin class...)

8. There's a quiet storm
And it never felt like this before
There's a quiet storm
That is you
There's a quiet storm
And it never felt this hot before
? Something by Sade, I hope

9. I’ll tell you one thing
If you would leave it would be a crying shame
In every breath and every word I hear your name calling me out
Smooth - Santana

10. Hey beautiful girl so lovely tonight
Show me the way show me the light
Music playing people swaying
Next thing I knew we started to groove
Tonight - Kool and the Gang

But that's over now
You keep me comin' back for more
Heaven - Bryan Adams

12. My mother told me
Yes she told me
I’d meet girls like you
She also told me stay away
She’ll fall in love with you
Surrender - Cheap Trick

Links. Um...

"Take Me Home" + "Tonight" = a song by Eddie Money (so 4, 6 and 10)
"Smooth" + "Operator" = a song by Sade (which means 8 must be by Sade and 3, 8 and 9)
"Never" + "Surrender" = an alleged song by Corey Hart (so 5, 7 and 12)
That leaves 1, 2 and 11, so they must be linked. I don't think I know any other Righteous Brothers songs besides Unchained Melody and You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling. But I think "Rock and Roll Heaven" is a more plausible combination than any combination of "Unchained Melody" and, well, anything. So I'm guessing that The Righteous Brothers must have done a song called "Rock and Roll Heaven"

Spoiler
1. Rock and Roll - Led Zeppelin
2. Unchained Melody - Righteous Brothers
3. Operator - Jim Croce
4. Take Me Home - Phil Collins
5. Sunglasses at Night - Corey Hart
6. Nope
7. Never - Heart
8. Sweetest Taboo - Sade
9. Smooth - Santana and Rob Thomas
10. Nope
11. Yecch. Heaven - Bryan Adams
12. Surrender - Cheap Trick

I got nuthin' on the matches. Corey Hart and Bryan Adams are Canadian, but Sade is Nigerian and I don't see any others in there...and Santana is Mexican. Nope, that's gotta be a dead end.

Spoiler
1. Rock and Roll - Led Zeppelin

2. Unchained Melody - The Righteous Brothers

3. Operator - Jim Croce

4. Nope

5. Nope

6. Nope

7. Nope

8. Sweetest Taboo - Sade

10. Nope

11. Nope

12. Surrender - Cheap Trick (At least up until the last line, unless I've been hearing it wrong all these years, or it could be a different and very similar song)

I'm not even gonna try and match 'em up, I missed too many and I'm too tired.
Enjoy every sandwich
