Lyrically Spaking 6/28/11

#1 Post by kroxquo » Sun Jun 26, 2011 11:24 pm

Welcome friends to the first installment of this summer's Lyrically Speaking. This year I will be hosting the game for a few weeks and wrapping things up the last week of July. Each day we will have the lyrics to 12 songs and you will have to identify the song and the artist and also the theme (if any) around which the song list is built. There also will be trivia questions and other bonuses (if I get around to it) and as always, just about any effort at humor or edification will result in bonus points. For week-day games, you'll have until the next day to post your answer and on Fridays you'll have the whole week-end because first I am sure it will take you a while to decide if you want to groove in the front seat or chill in the back seat. And no googling or other looking stuff up. Now on to today's game.

One thing I like about this Board is how everyone knows and (usually) gets along with each other. Many of you know each other very well, however I think I am not someone that a lot of you know much about. This is largely due to the fact that I mostly just participate in game threads, but still. So this game will be a chance to get to know me a bit better through a collection of bad music in a game that we're calling
THERE'S NO I IN TEAM, BUT THERE IS ME.

All of the following songs were number one on the American charts on a significant date in my life. Identify the song and the artist for one point each.

1. May 11, 1965 - I am born in Philadelphia
Girls as sharp as her are somethin' rare
But it's sad, she doesn't love me now
She's made it clear enough it ain't no good to pine

2. February 6, 1972 - My family moves to the Jersey shore
I'm, I'm so in love with you
Whatever you want to do
It's alright with me
'Cause you make me feel so brand new

3. August 20, 1979 - My family moves back to the Philly suburbs
Never gonna stop, give it up
Such a dirty mind, always get it up
For the touch of the younger kind

4. June 14, 1983 - I graduate Hatboro-Horsham High School, Horsham PA
First when there's nothing
but a slow glowing dream
that your fear seems to hide
deep inside your mind.

5. May 13, 1987 - I graduate from Grove City (PA) College
See the stone set in your eyes
See the thorn twist in your side
I wait for you

6. June 22, 1988 - I am accepted to Grad School at Duquesne University
There was a time when
Broken hearts and broken dreams
Were over.
There was a place where
All you could do was
Wish on a four leaf clover.

7. August 5, 1990 - I am married to Mrs. Kroxquo from Holland and accept a job as Museum Educator at Eckley Miners Village, Freeland PA
Treated me kind
Sweet destiny
Carried me through desperation
To the one that was waiting for me

8. February 26, 1991 - My first child Janneke is born
I used to cry myself to sleep at night
But that was all before he came
I thought love had to hurt to turn out right
But now he's here

9. June 17, 1993 - My second child Marieke is born
Like a moth to a flame
Burned by the fire
My love is blind
Can't you see my desire?

10. April 5, 2000 - I relocate my family to North Carolina to switch careers to teaching
She reminds me of a west side story
Growing up in Spanish Harlem
She's living the life just like a movie star

11. September 22, 2002 - I win $29,801 on Jeopardy
I met this chick and she just moved right up the block from me
And uhh, she got the hots for me the finest thing my hood done seen
But oh no, oh no, she gotta a man

12. January 10, 2005 - My third child Saskia is born
Baby I just don't get it, do you enjoy being hurt?
I know you smelled the perfume, the make-up on his shirt
You don't believe his stories, you know that they're all lies
Bad as you are, you stick around and I just don't know why

Bonus - What is a song (with artist) that is important to you and why?

Bonus Trivia - Which of these artist is the only one I've seen perform live?

Question (I'm new to this): Do we post answers in this thread under spoilers, or submit them in some other fashion?

In thread with spoilers. To save space, it's courteous to use the "spoiler=" tag. --Bob

Gracias for the tip, Bob78164. :)
Spoiler
Oh, dear. This is going to be a bloodbath...ah well. I'm going to try to pull out at least a guess for all of them. No guarantees they're going to be anywhere close to the correct song, though. :)

1. Daydream Believer, by the Monkees (My thought process on this one: "Hey! Let's pull out a random 60s song that remotely could work! That sounds good.")

2. You Make Me Feel Brand New, by Smokey Robinson (I'm pretty sure I'm entirely making this up...)

3. Never Gonna Give You Up, by Rick Astley? That's all I can think of for this one. (Apparently my brain has been Rickroll'd.)

4. Some long-forgotten B-side by Bryan Adams?

5. With or Without You, by U2

6. We Are The World, by USA for Africa (Seeing as they just recorded a 25th anniversary recreation of "We Are The World," I know this is incorrect just off the year you gave, but after I read "there was a time" I couldn't think of any other song this could be. Sigh...)

7. I Wanna Dance With Somebody, by Whitney Houston (K, by this point I'm just throwing out tunes and seeing if they'll stick.)

8. Music Box, by Mariah Carey (Was that even a song, or just an album title? Oh well, it's worth a shot.)

9. Standing Outside The Fire, by Garth Brooks

10. Jenny from the Block, by Jennifer Lopez

11. Who Let The Dogs Out, by Baha Men (This is probably gruesomely wrong. But for some reason, the quote speaks to me as rather canine/Australian.)

12. Bring Me To Life, by Evanescence

A song that's important to me (one among many): "I Won't Leave You Lonely Tonight" by Shania Twain. I grew up listening to country (I still do, but not as rabidly as I did in my childhood), and Shania Twain was (and is) one of my favorite country artists. (Yeah, I know, she's more country-pop, but I consider her essentially in the country genre.) As an incredibly awkward third-grade boy, I sang this song to one of my elementary school crushes while we were sitting on someone's backyard swing. Then I (apparently?) proposed marriage to her (her memory, not mine). I still remember that night to this day. (Funnily enough, we ended up living just a dorm building away my first year of college just 2 years ago, and she ended up becoming a crush of mine again. I refrained from any marriage proposals or Shania Twain serenades, however.)

With Or Without You - U2 (My 6th grade class took a field trip to the Science Center on this day. I still have a picture I took of the boys from that class (There were 8 of us as opposed to about 16 girls, which would've been nice maybe a few years later in our lives) posed by the rocket that was on the grounds.)

Because Without Him I Wouldn't Be Secretary of State - Hillary

Bonus - What is a song (with artist) that is important to you and why?

Well, if it doesn't have to be a certain point in your life, I'd like to submit a song that has been carrying me through difficult situations for 15 years now. Whenever I know I am about to enter a pressure packed situation (Usually something that is brand new to me, because I absolutely HATE the unfamiliar), I will begin singing Love Will Find a Way, by Pablo Cruise to myself, and it always helps take my mind off of things. I was shocked to discover just recently that Pablo Cruise was actually a band and not some guy.....

Bonus Trivia - Which of these artist is the only one I've seen perform live?

Of the few I got, guess I'll go with the obvious..... U2

Good Vibrations, Beach Boys -- It's the whole "sun and fun" theme. We didn't have a music scene like SoCal did, but we had plenty of sun and fun, and we could buy Beach Boys records and listen to them blasted out of radios in cars with open windows. Not our car radio, I hasten to add -- Mom would never permit it in a car she was driving ...

Pretty sure you didn't go to a Knack concert when you were seven, so I give up.
-- In Iroquois society, leaders are encouraged to remember seven generations in the past and consider seven generations in the future when making decisions that affect the people.
-- America would be a better place if leaders would do more long-term thinking. -- Wilma Mankiller

The following is roughly what I had posted in my first post in this thread. I also prefaced it with a spanking joke, but that thunder is long stolen. I always work on LS in Notepad and paste into a thread when I'm done, as I lost all my work once before when typing directly into the entry box. I only save my notepad work until I see that my post has been saved correctly. Do I now have to save them until every dipshit with the capability to edit my posts has posted their entries?

'Cause you make me feel so brand new

I Got You - Split Enz
My first girlfriend and I first heard this song near the start of our first road trip, driving down the coast to San Diego. I loved the song instantly, became a huge Split Enz/Crowded House/Neil Finn fan and it remains one of my favorites to this day.

Bonus Trivia - Which of these artist is the only one I've seen perform live?
WtF? This was added after the quiz was posted and had already been responded to. Do we need to wait until the last minute to turn in our answers so we don't miss any added questions? When is the last minute?

Well they do, but the plates are Dutch!

In thread with spoilers. To save space, it's courteous to use the "spoiler=" tag.
No one (except perhaps TubaDave) here gives a crap about space. We use the "spoiler=" tag because it's the easiest way. You quote the OP, copy the entire thing out to some workspace (Notepad, Wordpad, Word, etc.) and find/replace "quote" with "spoiler." Then add your responses and copy it back to the thread.

It is courteous to use ONE spoiler tag (of either flavor) for your entire post. No one wants to click on an individual spoiler for each response.
