Yeah, I know it's afternoon (EDT).

Saturday elwing and I went to our local Mega-Mart (combination grocery and department store) because we needed groceries and she needed to return an item of clothing. We went to the service desk and stood behind a man who was buying lottery tickets. He handed the girl behind the counter a $100 bill and asked for a variety of lottery tickets (we have the Powerball, the Mega Millions and several local games also). She had to issue the tickets, then he asked her to check them to see if there were any winners. A couple of the local games gave him cash and free tickets, which he reinvested in more lottery tickets. After 20 minues he finally finshed, walking away with considerably less than the $100 he started with. So elwing made it to the counter. The girl said there would be no problem with the return, but she needed to see elwing's driver's license. So she presented the girl with her Alaska license. The girl tried to punch the information into her register but it wouldn't take. Turns out that they don't have a code in their system for Alaska, so I had to give her my driver's license.

And it's hot and humid, with record temperatures expected for the next couple days.

Reminds me of the fun I have trying to get in the Kansas City casinos with my Illinois drivers license that is in the middle of its 4 years sticker renewal. It's the most fun you can have with rent-a-cop flunkies and a valid ID, as long as you're in no hurry to actually get into the casino.....

I think this may have been the tipping point. The novelty has worn off and the irritation is just beginning.

One of our 2 local Target stores just renovated to expand their grocery to include fresh produce. They sent out a coupon for a free dozen of eggs. When I was there on Saturday, it was much busier than usual. I was the third person in my checkout line. The checker was very slow and deliberate, as if she didn't fully trust the scanner. When she had finished scanning the first customer's purchases, the customer pulled out a wad of coupons. Crap! My Target had become a regular grocery store. The checker started to search through umpteen bags to see if the customer had actually purchased the item represented on each coupon. I told her that if she just scans each coupon, the register will tell her whether or not the item had been purchased. Sheesh!!!11

New to our area also.

The "free egg" shelf was cleaned out on Saturday. IIRC, I didn't even bother to ask an employee if they had more because the coupon doesn't expire until 6/13.

I was wondering if this was a local decision or part of a more national trend.

Give the kids a break!

Not that some people would think so, but there is a certain skill to being a grocery checker. Years ago when Mecca expanded into the grocery biz, those poor cashiers were at sixes and sevens for some time.

I went back to Target today and got my free eggs. As I approached the aisle where I saw them Saturday, I (now) noticed that they have an end-cap refrigerator full of the give-away eggs. I just didn't see it on Saturday and didn't want to take the time to ask an employee if they had any more eggs.

There's something I noticed today that I didn't pick up on when the store was full of people on Saturday. The aisles with refrigerated and freezer cases sport some new (to me) technology. They each have a motion sensor above the double-doors of each section of display case. When they sense someone approaching, they turn on the lights in the display case. As you walk down the aisle, you get kind of a "Billie Jean" video effect as each new set of lights is turned on. Perhaps these have been around, but I've never noticed them in our other, older grocery stores.

I've heard about these before. One of those energy saving gimmicks I saw in the Mecca rag one time that I have yet to actually see in real life yet. The freezer/cooler part of our expansion is still a few weeks away from opening, but I'd bet we don't have those. Heck, I saw the notes on a few of the new coolers we got saying they were used demos from some corporate Mecca showcase. Yeah, we get the best of the best....

I've been noticing that Target commercial about getting ready for summer, when everybody spontaneously starts setting up and playing with all the summer equipment in the aisle.

Damned tempting scenario for a flash mob, that is!

Oh and since NO ONE has mentioned my avatar change in, like weeks, that is part of a ridiculously long project i am working on.

I would guess that it is about 1/2 way done.

I have finished the entire left side and am now working on the daylilies in the middle working to the right.

Give me about another 5 years and it should be done.

No, seriously.

You should have put Erin in the cart!

At Kroger she likes to push on of the small carts they have there for kids, but she usually wants to find some way to hitch a ride even though her legs were too long for the seat before she was two. It took some maneuvering to get her seated...

I used to think it was fun to get to push the shopping cart as a kid....

That's beautiful; I love it. And I can sympathize on the timeline. I began a project for my mom, a "Footprints" beach scene well over ten years ago. Still not done, and won't be since I can't cross-stich any longer. Here's hoping you are more successful in your attempt.
