My friend Charley Kline at UCLA was the first person to use ARPANET. I had been using the SDS Sigma 7 that became the first node to compile and execute programs written in the SNOBOL language. The idea was that the ARPANET would interconnect the existing networks of the various organizations (thus "Internet") but it took quite some time before there was more than just one computer connected at each site. The ARPANET was developed for, not by the DoD for use by those who had ARPA research grants.
