Mere says he was an English teacher, but he says he does not know about American poetry. He taught Shakespeare and would know about English poetry.

The show has asked about "O Captain! My Captain!" before, which I remembered from
Dead Poets Society. I wasn't sure if this was the same poem or another, but Lincoln seemed like a good bet here. I was also pretty sure that Whitman predeceased all the other choices, which makes elegy-writing for them a bit difficult.

At first I ruled out Lincoln because of O Captain! figuring that was the elegy for Lincoln then I remember the poem and had to backtrack.
