WalMart has the Wii game system on sale this week for $199 with a $50 gift card (bringing the price down to $149). I want to know just how much extra stuff I will need to buy to play some of the basic games.

I see tons of devices out there and I don't want to buy anything I really don't need. I just want the items for bowling, golf and maybe hockey if they have that. If any of you have a game that you really enjoy, let me know about that too.

Thanks,

Ray

The Wii Fit is a nice package. I don't use it as much as I should though.

2 controllers is a gimmee. 4 if you get the new Super Mario game. Which we have ordered for Christmas.

I have had a wii for about 3 years and I would suggest that if you are only going to play bowling, golf and hockey that you get one extra remote ($40) and one extra nunchuk ($20).
THe system comes with one controller(wiimote) and one nunchuk and wii sports which includes golf, tennis, bowling, baseball and boxing. For golf and bowling you do not need more than 1 controller, you can just pass around the controller between turns but for the other games you need to have a second wiimote for tennis and baseball and a second wiimote and nunchuk for boxing.

There are other bowling and golf games out there but I would suggest that you start with the wii sports ones because they are about as good as anything else out there. I don't know any of the hockey games so I'm not much help there.

You may also consider picking up the WiiPlay which is a 9 more minigames and a wiimote for $50. So basically you are getting the 9 games for $10. I would not buy the games for $25 but for $10 more than a wiimote I think it may be a good deal. I also would consider the Wii Resort which is a bunch more minis with an attachment which makes the controller more sensitive. This runs $50 I think but i would suggest maybe picking this up later.

STAY AWAY FROM THE SPORTS PACKS (those things that look like tennis rackets or bats or whatever.) They are totally unnecessary, don't add anything and probably make things more awkward.

I think the Wii is a fun system and I steal at $149 or $199 so I recommend buying one. Everyone from my parents who are nearing 60 to my 4,6,and 8 year old niece and nephews enjoy them and in fact after playing mine they went out and bought theirs.I have bought more wii games than I care to admit so let me know if you have any more questions.

Wii fit is nice, too. I think it is around $90 (at least it was when I bought mine) but it includes a balance board and a lot of games that use shifting of weight as the gameplay.

I am curious. Are there Wii games that replicate ski jumping or the luge? These classic winter sports always have fascinated me, and I would love to "try" them in the warmth and safety of my living room.

How about a Wii game for Millionaire? Let's see, it could be a platform that you have to be careful about falling off from (a la Reege), a sweat-inducing chair, check-grabbing device ...

Thanks! This could save me from making one of those former MasterCharge commercials:

Daydreaming -- no charge
One-day lift ticket at Lake Placid -- $67
Travel and lodging in high season -- $3,297
Emergency orthopedic surgery, hospitalization and rehab -- $82,948
Mere survival -- Priceless

I think this is a great deal - so I was interested myself - but when I go on Walmart.com, it only shows it as $199, nothing about a $50 gift card. Was that in their flier or did you see it somewhere else?

In theory, you never really need any controller other than the remote and nunchuk. The games where you could use anything more generally come with one of the aids. For example, Super Mario Kart comes with a wheel into which you insert the remote, and I think the shooting games come with some sort of gun. You do need extras, though, for more than one person playing at a time. Mario Kart wheels are cheap on eBay or even at GameStop. Same with extra remotes and nunchuks for basic play. Super Mario Galaxy is fun with two people playing, and there's always the family competition (up to four) on Mario Kart. BD and I are evenly matched. We both stink at it.

If you don't want to go through batteries, spend about $30 for the third-party remote charger. The charges last for hours of steady play.

The ski jump is fun. I hold the record in our house, which frustrates my daughter to no end.

As my avatar suggests, I'm also a big fan of the Legend of Zelda game series. There is one Zelda game currently available on Wii, Twilight Princess. There is another one in the works which rumors suggest will be released next year. Until then, I'll have to settle for the new Zelda game for the Nintendo DS that comes out tomorrow.

My kids also enjoy the Rabbids games which are essentially a bunch of mini-games. And of course there are the Guitar Hero and Rock Band type games out there for which you'll need additional equipment. We don't have Rock Band. The Guitar Hero games that we have are for the PS2, so we only have guitar controllers for it, not the Wii, but they do make them for all of the main consoles.

I totally agree with TheSearch. I thought the Zelda game is excellent and I played it for about 65 hours of game play (pre baby) and Rayman raving Rabbids are a lot of fun with a lot of silly, crude humor. I like all three but I think maybe the 1st one is the best.

Well, if you're going to pay retail, then visit amazon.com via my website's Gentle Shopping link:

I myself got mine (for my sister) through amazon for it regular price of $199 and was wondering myself about what accessories to get ...

They ran the ad during the football game yesterday and said the sale ended on the 11th. If lb sees this message, maybe he can fill in the details.

I actually pulled up the flier online yesterday evening, and found it. I did a search of all the stores in my area to find out if it was in stock anywhere (the flier said at least 10 per store, but no rain checks). Only one store had it so I went out and got it! Today I've been searching ebay for some of the accessories, to try to save a little money. The cashier in electronics tried very hard to get me to use my $50 gift card on full priced accessories, but I didn't go for it.

I know as much about the special sales that go on in the store as I do about the Wii itself, which is nothing......
