A first-class Dursting! (51% may not indicate tremendous confidence, but this was a question about New York after all...)

It was too bad, she was showing lots of promise to go far.

They played a song from this on NPR a couple weeks ago and interviewed the band members. They discussed "Meet the Elements" and the NPR host asked if they were familiar with "The Element Song" by Tom Lehrer. They weren't.

Dursted by the audience - what a shame. I think they may have been misled by the use of "30 Rock" to refer to NBC.

Ouch! That's a sensible explanation for why this was such an effective distractor.

Did Meredith have any comments about the "brilliant New York audience" after this one? :|

So, okay, it's black, but otherwise it looks like a pretty typical modern skyscraper and not much like a rock. :P

I never heard of the Black Rock and probably would have done the same thing she did.

25K: I did not know. Fox wasn't around when Saarinen was alive, but could have bought the building. PAF. Since it still exists!

It's not obvious from the photo, but Wikipedia explains it.
The building is known as Black Rock for the dark granite cladding. Unlike some major skyscrapers built in that section of midtown Manhattan during the 1950s and 60s, the pillars are more dominant than the glass windows between them.

OK it's the ship from Lost on ABC. Still the wrong answer.

I think I am toast on this answer, too, cuz I probably trust the audience although it's not as clear cut as I would like.

I did not know of Black Rock, and there was not enough of a spike on CBS to help (it got barely more than ABC). If this is not well-known enough to be a 10K level question, these kind of tricky questions appear to be another step, along with the loss of PAF, unskilled celebrity ATEs, and no "trivia talk" or seeing previous contestant games from the green room, to make WWTBAM more of a game of chance than anything else. Add to that casting of people who need the money and are unwilling to risk going from 10K back to 5K and you get a very boring show. Then again maybe I as a native New Yorker 'should' know all about Black Rock and just did not know it.

Well, if New Yorkers don't know about the building (as the ATA results demonstrate), it's unlikely that anyone else would be familiar with it.

I haven't been to the audience in five years except for the 10th Anniversary shows with all the past contestants. I wonder if they get mostly locals or tourists nowadays. Or do they supplement their crowd with a paid audience, which I figure would be WE/WE.

That's one of the audience interactions I fantasize about, every time I hear Meredith refer to her brilliant New York audiences.

I can see why they all screwed this one up. They equated the nickname with Rockefeller Center. I've seen pictures of Rockefeller Center and I know that none of its buildings are black. So that rules out NBC... and it also rules out FOX because the building in which News Corp is based is technically a part of Rockefeller Center. I would've asked the NYC audience, too, but then I would've chided them for picking NBC and FOX. So the next best answer is CBS, and I would've picked that one.

I could see an out-of-towner who watches 30 Rock get this wrong. (The show is named for 30 Rockefeller Center, the NBC Building.) But most New Yorkers should have heard of Black Rock. And it was mentined in the national news when Cronkite died.

The trades periodically use "Bad Day at Black Rock" for bad news about CBS.

Then I guess if the audience had been full of television insiders, they'd have gotten this question right.

Yes. Can we confirm that this show was actually taped on September 25? (I'm trying to clean up the Audition List.) --Bob
