Dr. Jerri Nielsen FitzGerald, who diagnosed and treated her own breast cancer before a dramatic rescue from the South Pole, has died. She was 57.

I met Dr. Fitzgerald when she came through on a speaking tour, and I'm glad that I bought an autographed copy of her book, Ice Bound... . She was wonderful, warm, funny, and upbeat. I'm sorry it ended so soon for her.

I have to wonder if she hadn't had that time at the pole during which she couldn't be evacuated, this story might be different. On the other hand, she was in official remission for several years. I'm glad she at least had them.
