I was cruising along until the $25K. Ouch!!! PaF a Googler fast.

50K1- no idea. STQ.

50K STQ-I knew this one cold. I was screaming "Eleanor Roosevelt!!!" at the TV. When she talked herself out of saying that, I was screaming "NO NO NO!!" at the TV. WHY do contestants talk themselves out of correct answers on this show??? We've seen this happen a lot, and it bugs me.
I'm just a game show nerd.

No, no, no. Rule #3 of the ATA: Never ask the audience an obscure science question.

And this is why.

$50K: A and B looked too obvious. It had to be either C or D. I doubt that any of the other three lifelines would help, so it would be best to STQ.

$50K #2: Great switch for me. I knew this one cold. I put my head in my hands when Jennifer talked herself out of the right answer.

She's from "our fair city".

My carrier. It's funny, too, because there was big news a year or two ago about Cingular purchasing AT&T Wireless; now the tables have been turned, so to speak.

Talk about a tough WWOQ®! I figured the audience would be all over the map for answers. Looking at the word, "thermo" is "heat" and "haline" refers to salt (compounds containing elements in that column of the periodic chart are called "halides"), so it makes sense that it would be "A". I suspect it refers to the Gulf Stream in some fashion - and a quick Google check says that it does (though it's more than that).

I'd still have all my lifelines at this point and it would be time to use one. In the comfort of my recliner I guessed the right answer but in the Hot Seat I'd have gone with STQ, because this might not be an easy Google and even my good friend, even more of a WWII buff than I, didn't know it when I asked him.

My instinct was to say "C", but again, in the Hot Seat, I'd have been unwilling to risk it, so it's time to PAF (this is probably an easier Google than the original).

Oh, and once again the answer to the STQ was the same as the answer to the original question. I'm beginning to think that this is more than just a statistical aberration.

Has there been some pop cultural reference that would make this particular code word familiar enough for $50K, as opposed to being nothing but a WWOQ? There was the Nicholas Cage movie, Windtalkers, but that was about Navaho code talkers (IIRC) in the Pacific theater.

And, thinking about this some more, why would they even need a code phrase for Adolf? The code talkers were used for tactical situations, not for strategic plans like the Normandy invasion plans. Words for tanks and artillery and soldiers were important; for Adolf, not so much.

I live in a state with a great enough number of Comanches that they've built seven casinos in recent years. The last surviving WWII code talker died in 2005. Still, I don't remember Hitler's being called "crazy white man."

Googling the two words Comanche and Hitler does turn up some interesting articles, though, including this one about Charles Chibitty, that last code talker --

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... 01542.html

Because there was no Comanche word for "tank," the code talkers used their word for "turtle." "Bomber" became "pregnant airplane." "Hitler," Mr. Chibitty recalled, was "posah-tai-vo," or "crazy white man."

Yes, I did some googling after asking the question and found those links. Still, while it's possible to find anything on the internet, I doubt that a passing reference in an obscure obituary from 2005 would make this trivia well-known enough to be a $50K question.

And remember--the codicil to Godwin's Law says that you cannot end a discussion thread by intentionally calling someone posah-tai-vo! 8)

I guess that she did not see the global-warming propagnada film, Day After Tomorrow.

Al Gore would be ashamed.

I'm agreeing with you, Marley. I was trying to say that if Oklahomans hadn't heard this, where Mr. Chibitty's death would have been a story of great local interest, I wouldn't expect many other people to know it.

16K: I was pretty sure the other 3 were Ninja Turtles, but I'd waste my ATA here to be sure.

50K: I know what I'd like it to be. Doesn't mean that's what it is. Don't know if I'm leaning (correctly, it turns out) because I've read it somewhere or just because of "like it to be". Reluctantly STQ

STQ 50K: Pretty sure I know this (& can in addition rule out Coretta Scott King, who has not been writing this column the past 50 years!); sure enough to throw the 50/50 at it.
